Wilkinson In Review 2023
Reflecting on 2023 Markets
First, let’s state the obvious: markets were volatile this year—positive for the first few months, after which they trended downward, only to rebound sharply in the latter half of the year.
As of December 11, the Dow Jones is up 9.64%, while the S&P 500 is up 20.28%. The NASDAQ composite, which tracks technology companies, is up a whopping 37.78%. Finally, the SPDR Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Fund, which tracks investment grade U.S. bonds, has a 1.64% return as of November 30th.
Different stock indexes had varying performance, in part because some of the year’s best-performing companies are more heavily weighted in the S&P 500 and the NASDAQ.
Bonds had a challenging year with interest rate increases, because when interest rates increase, generally the prices of existing bonds fall as investors have higher demand for new bonds with the higher interest rates.
The Fed raised interest rates 5 times this year, and left rates unchanged 2 times so far (one more meeting to go). We believe we are close to the end of the rate-raising cycle, but that doesn’t mean interest rates will go down anytime soon. They may remain at elevated levels for some time.
Team Accomplishments in 2023
We’ve experienced significant growth in 2023 in a variety of aspects. New clients have entrusted close to $57 million in assets to us this year; we’ve started over twice as many financial planning engagements this year compared to 2022; and our team has continued to grow and develop, with several members being promoted.
I am also proud to share that I was named one of the 2023 Forbes Best-In-State Women Advisors and one of the 2023 Forbes Best-In-State Wealth Advisors.
Our Meals on Wheels (MOW) collection drive was a massive success: seasonal care packages full of cozy blankets, towels, crossword puzzle books, lotion, soap, pet toys and treats (and more!) will be delivered by MOW to our elderly and disabled neighbors. In total, we pledged ten bags and surpassed our target—thank you to everyone who contributed items!
